Rachel's Fundraising Page for Fisher House
August of 2018 was when my family first heard of the Fisher House. My dad, a Vietnam veteran, was to undergo surgery in St. Louis which was miles away from his small farm house in southern Indiana. The surgical procedure would prevent Dad from leaving the hospital for 3 days. My family was given the opportunity to stay at the Fisher House during Dad's hospital stay.
The Fisher House was such a blessing for our family. It has been a blessing to many military and veterans' families since the first establishment in 1990. They have 82 houses in operation, have served 368,000 families, and have saved $451 million in savings to families. While military men and women or veterans receive medical treatment, their families can find comfort in residing at the House until their loved one is healthy. That is exactly what my mom and I did. I can remember staying at the John Cochran V.A. Medical Center late into the evening that first night. When mom and I arrived at the Fisher House, there was a kitchen stocked with prepared meals, drinks, and snacks. The comfort of the dining room and sitting room made us feel as if we were at home. The Fisher House gave us a sense of warmth and security when Dad underwent surgery.
This November I will be running the New York Marathon for Team Fisher House. I chose this organization because our military men and women sacrifice themselves and their families for us. Team Fisher House is one way that I can give back in appreciation to those military men and women.
You can help military and veterans’ families like ours when they may need it most.
