Fishing for Families, a Charity Tournament Benefiting the Fisher House Foundation
Senior Airman Heather Carter was looking forward to a long military career when a terrible accident left her left leg badly injured, and her life changed forever.
In her words: “I had been such an extrovert; I loved sports and loved life. Then the accident [happened], and my life changed overnight—and so did I. The chronic pain forced me to isolate. I became a hermit. I was hooked on meds. Depression became rampant. And, yes, I thought heavily about suicide.”
Heather’s mom, Vicky Carter, quit her job and made Fisher House her “home away from home” for 18 months while Heather adjusted to her new life. Other military families at the Fisher House became the Carters’ support system and were there to cheer Heather on as she walked into Fisher House on her new prosthetic for the first time. “In your darkest hours, when you think you have nowhere to turn,” says Vicky, “Fisher House offers a glimmer of hope. It was like a hand reaching down and pulling you up. You knew it was going to be OK.”
We can’t imagine what it was like for the Carter Family while their daughter recovered, but we definitely knew that we wanted to do something to help military families like them.
That’s why the team at Kayak Fishing Military Veterans decided to make our “Fishing for Families” tournament a fundraiser for Fisher House Foundation.
Please put the words “thank you for your service” into action today by supporting the KFMV "Fishing for Families" tournament which benefits the Fisher House Foundation.
You can help military and veterans families feel that glimmer of hope when they need it most, at a time of a medical crisis.
Donate with confidence: Fisher House has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator 14 years in a row and an A+ rating from CharityWatch/American Institute of Philanthropy.
