The Gilbert Garcia Family Fisher House Story
What it means to me personally. Two years ago, my grandfather left this earthly world. He was like a second father to me. My grandfather was at the VA hospital in Long Beach, CA for much of the last few years of his life, including his final days. When we knew we were down to days, my grandmother decided to stay on campus at the Fisher House. My sisters & I took turns staying with my grandmother there. We were given a two bed room with a private bathroom, & had a shared living room space & kitchen. Staying on campus at the hospital saved us about a 3 hour round trip drive to & from the hospital everyday. Being at the Fisher House, only a five minute drive from where my grandfather was, enabled us to be with him more during those last days (instead of spending our time driving) & made possible, for his wife of over 60 years, to be by his side & hold his hand as he passed.
You can help military and veterans’ families, like the Garcia’s, feel that sense of normality when they need it most, during a medical crisis.
