Dan's Fisher House Story
I never thought I would be a marathon runner. I ran turkey trots on Thanksgiving for family bragging rights. But when I got married I wanted to be the best version of myself and I set out to run even further. After my first half marathon, I was hooked. I craved the feeling I got after a long run and the energy and health benefits from a consistent running habit. I ran 3 marathons before I first tackled the Marine Corps Marathon in 2017. A friend from D.C. told me about Fisher House and the great work they do for military families. One of my best friends John (pictured) didn't get into the race via the lottery so he joined via Fisher House and we ran together. What started as a personal self improvement hobby tranformed into something much greater than ourselves. Running through our nations capital, amidst the monuments to so many brave men and women, and wearing the team Fisher House jersey was an experience I will never forget. And it is one that I am returning to this year.
John and I, friends since we were 14, are being joined by 2 more longtime best friends from our high school years, Mike and Eric. I know this will be a special experience for all of us. I have a fundraising "requirement" of $200 but I would love to be able to raise over $1000. No amount is too small and the support you provide will not only help military families but help fuel me through my 26.2 mile journey in October.
Thanks for reading my story and considering donating. Please see the video below for an account of how Fisher House helped the Chwalik family get through a difficult time in their lives.
You can help military and veterans’ families, like the Chwalik’s, feel that sense of normality when they need it most, during a medical crisis.
Fisher House has received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator 15 years in a row and an A+ rating from CharityWatch/American Institute of Philanthropy.
