Senior Airman Heather Carter was looking forward to a long military career when disaster struck. Injured in a freak accident, Heather’s left leg was badly shattered, and her life was changed forever.
After 14 grueling surgeries over four years, Heather and her doctors made the tough decision to amputate her leg. Her mom, Vicky Carter, quit her job to be at her daughter’s side, and took on the role of caretaker and advocate during Heather’s rehabilitation process. They stayed at Fisher House for more than a year.
Describing her time at Fisher House, Vicky said "In your darkest hours, when you think you have nowhere to turn, Fisher House offers a glimmer of hope."
When I got thyroid cancer last year, I was lucky enough to undergo surgeries and radiation at hospital facilities near my home - where I had family (and puppy!) support.
For injured and ill Service members, this is not always the case. They often undergo significant medical treatment at locations out of country and far from home.
Fisher House builds comfort homes near military and VA medical centers where military & veterans families can stay free of charge, while a loved one is in the hospital. Fisher House Foundation also operates the Hero Miles Program, using donated frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedside of injured service members as well as the Hotels for Heros program, unsing donated hotel points to allow family members to stay at hotels near medical centers without charge.
That is why I am running the Marine Corps Marathon this fall for Fisher House!
You can help military and veterans families when they need it most, at a time of a medical crisis, by donating now!
