Every year Sensei David Badurina directs the focus of his martial arts school, Liberty Martial Arts in Littleton New Hampshire, and its students and families towards a specific charitable goal. This year has been set as The Year of the Veteran. As such we have chosen the Fisher House Foundation as the recipient of our fundraising efforts.

We chose the Fisher House Foundation over the many other veteran-oriented charitable organizations based on three primary reasons and we feel it is important to share those with you:

1.    Each Fisher House location serves an absolutely vital function in the lives of both the injured veteran and especially in the lives of his or her family during an extremely stressful time, namely the hospitalization of the service member for a major surgical procedure and the in-hospital recovery period as well.

2.    The Fisher House Foundation has an A+ rating according to Charity Watch (https://www.charitywatch.org/ratings-and-metrics/fisher-house-foundation/531)as well as 97.17 rating from Charity Navigator.(https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=7585)

3.    The Fisher House Foundation and its individual Fisher House locations around the nation serve the families of veterans of all branches of the military equally.

Aside from the objective reasons for choosing The Fisher House Foundation outlined above, I would also like to point out my personal involvement - above and beyond my professional interest as Program Director for Liberty Martial Arts - with the organization. During the charity selection phase I, for lack of a better term, lobbied heavily in favor of the Fisher House Foundation. I am biased, and the reason was simple: I (or, more accurately, my family) made use of one of their facilities a few years ago.

I required serious surgery and my wife and children wished, of course, to be near me during this time. We did not have the money for them to stay in even the cheapest of motels for the multiple weeks I wa going to be in the hospital, never mind the cost of food, travel, and other incidentals that a family would incur in day-to-day life. We were, however, lucky enough to have a Fisher House facility in the area.

Using the Fisher House location, my family was allowed to stay in a secure building entirely for free and for as long as was necessary. There was a massive family room with movies and books (perfect for the kids!), a laundry room, and a community kitchen with stocked pantries and refrigerators. To top it off, a few gifts were provided to the little ones, and they even gave my wife some gift certificates for local businesses to offset the cost of food, drink, etc.

With my family being able to use the Fisher House while I was in the hospital freed me from worrying about the safety and well-being of my family and that, I have no doubt, aided in my recovery - both physical and mental. From this experience, my family and I know first-hand the benefit the Fisher House has for veterans and their families. That benefit is no small favor or perk; it is immensely beneficial and for it we are very grateful.

If you are at all interested or inclined to make even the smallest of donations to a charitable organization, I highly encourage you to consider this cause and this event. Let's make Liberty Martial Arts' 2017 Liberty Sprint a massive success!
Most of all, let’s help all of our wounded veterans, of all branches, men and women, and their families, rest easy and get well again.

Until everyone comes home.

Very Respectfully,

Eric McNail
Program Director
