Dr. Sebastian Kallingal's battle with cancer.
Retired Captain Sebastian Kallingal has been serving Guam as an internal medicine physician since the 1970’s. Taking care of patients was his real passion. He spent so many late nights and long hours really talking with his patients and helping them take care of their medical ailments. He has served over 10,000 of Guam patients in that time with compassionate and healing care.
In 2014, the tables were turned and Sebastian became the patient. He was first diagnosed with bone cancer in 2014. He initially had surgery with radiation and chemotherapy to battle this cancer. He battled through this bravely. The cancer came back again a year later in his leg, where he fought it again with surgery and radiation. About 1 year later the cancer showed up again in the left lung. He had surgery to remove some of his left lung in 2016. Sadly, in Jan 2017, the cancer came back in multiple places and he needed toxic chemotherapy to help slow the cancer.
He then went to Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio. The Fisher House welcome him and his wife Mary to stay there, very close to the hospital. The Fisher House not only gave them a place to live, but also a community of friends and supporters who would help them through this tough process. Over the course of the next 4 months, he underwent chemotherapy and medical care at BAMC. In that time period, he spent much time in the hospital, but also a long time at the Fisher House. They met many friends and shared many meals and experiences with the other Fisher House guests and staff. The chemo slowed the cancer some but ultimately, they decided to go back to Guam to be with family. One month later, on June 13, 2017, he died... still while still battling his cancer with chemotherapy.
He fought so valiantly against his cancer. He was able to have his final wishes….to die peacefully on his home island of Guam, surrounded with his family. May he finally rest in peace. We will remember and miss him forever.
