A Salute to Fisher House - In Memory of Don Boudreaux
Retired Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Don Boudreaux and his family first learned of the incredible work of Fisher House when Don was admitted to San Antonio Medical Military Center in fall 2016, for treatment of acute myeloid leukemia. Don fought in battles all over the world for more than 30 years, but his battle with leukemia was his toughest fight.
The staff and volunteers of Fisher House went out of their way to make sure Don, his 93-year-old mother, and his siblings were comfortable and experienced minimal stress during the holidays - especially given that they were far from home. Subsequently, Don returned to his home in Las Vegas, where he succumbed to cancer in July 2017.
Fisher House made an indelible impression on Don during a relatively short period...here’s why . . .
As the second oldest of a very large and close-knit family, Don often relied on his faith and family to navigate difficult times. Family meant everything to Don, and he embraced members of the military as part of his extended family. He was fondly known as Uncle Don to the children of many of his fellow airmen.
Fisher House is designed to allow families to stay together, enjoy meals together, and relax together. These are homes away from home, complete with fully-equipped kitchens, comfy TV lounges, libraries, on-site laundry facilities, and lovely private bedrooms with bathrooms. The homes are located near military medical facilities and allow for wounded warriors – from young active-duty soldiers to retired vets – and their families to heal together and share common experiences.
Don’s large family is blessed with many resources, but would not have been able to easily rally around Don without the help and hospitality of Fisher House. We met many families who would not have been able to be together during their time of medical crisis without Fisher House.
In memory of Don Boudreaux, we invite you to make a contribution to Fisher House so that U.S. military families facing medical crises will always have a place to stay at no charge.
Donate with Confidence - Fisher House has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator 13 years in a row and an 'A+' rating from CharityWatch /American Institute of Philanthropy.
Thank you from the Boudreaux family.
