Doc Moss' Fisher House Story

DONATE!

Retired Air Force MSgt Doc Moss and his wife Maria never wanted anyone to experience what they had – a family member sleeping in a car while their loved one was being treated at a military medical center far from home.

The Moss’ never forgot that experience  - and the physical, mental, and emotional toll it took on both of them.

In 2012, Doc TOOK ACTION by spearheading the fundraising campaign to build a Fisher House at the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System in Las Vegas, raising more than $3M in record-breaking time.

Here’s why . . .

Master Sergeant “Doc” Moss was an ammo specialist in the Air Force who built bombs for a living.  He was a “tough guy in the military where the mission always came first.”

In 1994, Doc suffered a critical back injury in the line of duty that brought this ‘tough guy’ to his knees.

Doc was medevac’d to a major military medical center for specialized care after local doctors failed to diagnose the cause of his paralyzing pain.

His wife Maria was frightened for herself and for Doc – she was new to this country and spoke little English, her new husband was undergoing emergency surgery for a debilitating injury, she was hours away from home, and she was sleeping in her car in the hospital parking lot.

Maria felt alone and afraid; Doc felt he had failed his new wife.

Had there been a Fisher House at that hospital, the experience would have been vastly different.  Maria would have had a comfortable place to stay, staff and volunteers to help her navigate the hospital system, and other guests to comfort her in this very scary situation.

Would you like to follow in the Moss’ footsteps and do more than say, “Thanks for your service” to military families?

Donate with Confidence - Fisher House has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator 13 years in a row and an 'A+' rating from CharityWatch /American Institute of Philanthropy.
